IAOOC - Mike from EnglishLads.com Suspended From Teaching PE In UK Elementary School
This week's installment of IAOOC comes with a true story about "Mike" from EnglishLads.com. A British tabloid reported that Mike from EnglishLads.com was better known as Sam Handley, a 25-year-old PE teacher at Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone, Kent.

I'm from the area---went to a school about 10 miles away. This is just a perfect illustration of how British schoolkids really are spiteful, thick, vicious little shits, and how the British education has become incredibly puritanical, as well as pervasively incompetent. (Quite a large number of our kids leave school with negligible literacy and numeracy.) In Italy or Spain this would just never happen.

It looks like other people have complained about the wording of the original petition, Mike, because it now reads "Sam Handley is not gay and does have a girlfriend - but this should not matter either way." Marginally better, but if it shouldn't matter why mention it?
As an aside, where did you get the idea that grammar school means elementary school, QC?! A grammar school generally teaches 11-16 year olds (16 is the school leaving age in Britain).

by voluntarily posing nude on a website, he has put himself in a position where he is open to significant ridicule from his students. he no longer has their respect, and teaching becomes impossible.
the kids themselves shouldn't be able to get hold of explicit pictures, but i know i could get porn when i was 14, and it's infinitely easier nowadays.
legally, even if there isn't a clause in his contract about nude modelling, there will definitely be one about bringing his place of employment in to disrepute. the fact that the story is on most of the major british news paper sites and dozens of blogs, dragging the school's name through the mud, i don't think he has a leg to stand on for unfair dismissal. what is actually more common is that the staff member is asked to resign it return for a reference for their next place of employment.

inertone: whether or not Sam can command the respect of his students after this is surely something that needs to be established. If he's willing to put with what for some would be excruciating embarrassment by carrying on teaching, and ends up commanding his pupils' respect, then why not let him try? According to the petition Sam has the support of this pupils and is a gifted teacher, so there should be no a priori rule saying he should be sacked based on prudishness. Incidentally, it wasn't Sam who 'brought his place of employment into disrepute' - he'd posed for these photos before he got the job. It seems to have been the pupils who found and distributed the photos, and the newspapers who then published the story who've done that, as well as drag down someone who seems to be a decent enough guy just for fun...
