Queerying: Photographer Kevin D. Hoover, Part One

Over the last several days, I’ve had the very good fortune of being in touch with photographer Kevin D. Hoover, whose work you’re likely familiar with in one place or another. This up-and-coming artist has his hands in a number of different projects; we even featured some of his (extremely hot) work with Rogan Richards last week. Take this opportunity to learn more about the mastermind behind your last orgasm.

QueerClickCould you give me a little more biographical information, in particular what got you started in photography?
Kevin Hoover I’m originally from Chicago, but consider NYC home now. Regarding photography, I was always fascinated by the old Hollywood glamour shots taken by George Hurrell. But it was the film, “Eyes of Laura Mars” starring Faye Dunaway that made me need to be a photographer. I saw the images in the film which were created by Rebecca Blake and Helmut Newton and my inner voiced screamed, “I want to do that!”

QueerClickWho are some of your artistic inspirations, both photographic and otherwise?
Kevin HooverGeorge Hurrell, Victor Skrebneski, Francesco Scavullo, Rick Day, Thomas Synnamon, Justin Monroe, Michael Stokes, Mark Henderson, Luis Rafael, Jorge Freire and Abel Cruz, Dylan Rosser, and a host of other photographers. I also find inspiration in mid-century modern design and architecture, Japanese design and ancient Egyptian art and architecture, plus aspects of ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Especially considering that my main focus is the male physique, you know I love nude wrestling and brawny gladiators. The STARZ television show, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” premiered on January 22, 2010. I felt like it was a birthday gift from STARZ to me.

QueerClick Who have been your favorite models to shoot?
Kevin HooverThis question always gets me into trouble because I sometimes forget people while I’m in the moment. I’ve had the good fortune to shoot so many amazing guys. I shot Rogan Richards a few weeks ago and he is amazing to work with. A fun, joyous personality, zero attitude and he looks better in person than any picture or video has managed to capture. Dee Whitt, whom I’ve worked with the most is a favorite. He’s my Wonder Twin. Robert Bell with Silver Models here in NYC. I do believe I was his second photo shoot and we got the cover for BeautifulMag’s “Sex Edition” earlier this year. Michelangeo DiNapoli is always fun to shoot. Matt Murnane with Colby Models is great to work with. Alejandro Suarez is very special to me. He was the model I worked with for my first published layout in Blake Magazine, a French men’s lifestyle magazine. If you can’t tell, I feel really connected to “my guys”. I have a great fondness for them and am extremely protective of them.
