Without further ado, here’s the second part of our interview with photographer Kevin Hoover. Hopefully the first installment left you hungry for more. What do you think readers? Be on the lookout for this photographer in the future.

QueerClickWhat might people be surprised to learn about the experience of photographing big names? Any divas? Anyone surprisingly camera shy?
Kevin Hoover I have yet to work with anyone who is camera shy, lol. Divas on the other hand, I’ve met a couple and most of them were only big names in their own heads. What really might surprise people is that many of the models that I’ve worked with were really thin or overweight when they were younger. When they look in the mirror, they still see that skinny or fat kid. People might also be surprised by the intelligence of these guys. Several of my guys work in education. One is a surgeon, another is a chemical engineer and another speaks several languages and recently graduated from Harvard. I have yet to meet a stereotypical “dumb jock.”

QueerClickWhat has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Kevin HooverThat’s tough. I’ve had a few. My first published layout, which was in Blake Magazine, immediately comes to mind. Having three layouts, two of them cover stories for Beautiful Mag in the span of five months. And most recently, several of my images being included in “Turn: Gear,” which was released in September 2012. I finally received my copy yesterday and have walked around with it like it’s a purse! To have my images included with those of so many photographers whose work I admire is extremely overwhelming, in a great way.

QueerClick Obviously your images are all very sexy; I was wondering if you wanted to talk a little bit about the distinction between porn and art. How does your work try to navigate between the two, or is that a distinction that you even buy into or find useful?
Kevin HooverMy motto is the difference between art and porn is the lighting. I find walking that line and even stepping over it exciting. Justin Monroe and Joe Oppedisano are huge influences on me regarding that aspect of my work. By nature, I am a very sexual and sensual person. I think it’s only natural that it show in my imagery. I know this makes some people uncomfortable, embarrassed, offended and even repulsed. That’s their issue, not mine. To quote the scholar RuPaul, “What you think of me is none of my damned business.” I find sex and sexuality to be as natural as breathing. If people are turned on by my work, that’s a huge compliment. So I say, stay tuned! I want the coffee table book I’m working on to be such a turn-on that Amazon recommends it to be purchased with a large bottle of lube!
