QC Open Forum: Do You Think That Porn Addicts Have Minds Like Drug Addicts?

Do you feel like porn is your fix? If they answer is yes, you might have a problem. Here at the QC headquarters where we are flooded with tons of delicious porn material coming from different sources that we filter and curate for our audience, in a sense we are addicts but we happily do it because a) we love the industry and b) we love our readers but since our perspective comes from a work point of view we are interested in knowing what’s the perception of the average consumer.
First, let’s define porn, some call it an offer that allows men and women alike the chance to explore their sexual fantasies, we pretty much agree with that statement. But what happens when your brain gets too attached to that stimuli? Researchers have found that when people watch X-rated images it causes a surge in the chemical dopamine (the neurotransmitter responsible for reward and pleasure,) but as these dopamine surges get repeated the brain becomes desensitised to it and enters a cycle when a “hit” is not enough. If it sounds familiar is because it’s the same pattern found in the brains of drug addicts.

“Compulsive pornography users have greater activity (in the brain) to explicit videos in similar regions involved in drug cues.” Dr Valerie Voon Neuroscientist, University of Cambridge

The science of this topic was explored in Channel 4 documentary “Porn on the Brain” narrated by anti-pornography activist, and former editor of Loaded Magazine, Martin Daubney who also conducted an interview with a self-identified “porn addict” (who had to make a stop to have a wank mid-interview in the toilet of a gas station) and even subjected himself to a brain scan to show how certain parts of the brain light when he was watching X-rated material. The ventral striatum, dorsal anterior cingulate and amygdala – were active in the sex addicts – and experts said these are the regions that are also particularly activated in drug addicts when shown drug stimuli. The University study marked the first time researchers found a possible link between regularly viewing pornography and physical harm. However, they noted that is possible that people who spend more time looking at pornography are born with a certain type of brain. We ask you QC reader, do you think is an exaggeration to compare a high consumption of pornography to a drug addiction? Have you notice a pattern in your own behaviour? Tell us in the comments!

If you think you are watching too much porn have a break, go outside or do some other activity you like. Don’t worry QC will be right here as always with more porn stuff when you return! 🙂
