QC Exclusive: Maurizio Von Trapp, Director Of The Upcoming Gay Porn Documentary “Pornumentary Experimenta”, Answer Our Questions!

When it comes to porn, here at QC we are always interested in all the voices and perspectives that the world has to offer about the industry. And there’s a rather interesting project that we really would like to see get made. British director Maurizio Von Trapp is in the process of trying to make a documentary called “Pornumentary Experimenta” that will follow some of the world’s most notorious gay porn stars while embarking in a visual journey to explore an often shadowed side of porn and the audiences consumption habits. With that purpose he has recently launched a crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo.

“The film will be sensual rather than sexual – which, in a way, is so much sexier.”

“Pornumentary Experimenta” already has the endorsement of some pretty familiar porn names and faces like Paddy O’Brian, Jessy & Ricky Ares, Mickey Taylor, Logan Moore, Kayden Gray and Bryce Cruiz so we’re sure there will be plenty of sex and sexiness on the screen!
Maurizio Von Trapp has graciously agreed on answering some of our questions and he has some interesting details to share. QC reader what do you think of this project? Join the conversation in the comments and read the full interview after the jump!

Hello Maurizio! Can you briefly tell us about your background and the genesis of Pornumentary?

I came up with the idea years ago, and then just sort of left it there. Then, one day I watched this strange film called Fruit of Paradise, which made no sense but had these striking images – juxtapositions of naked bodies and projections of nature – and the idea of making a documentary about porn got mixed with the desire to make something a little more experimental… And I thought, well, I have something pretty unique here, let’s do it!

How did you shortlisted the porn stars that will be featured on your documentary?

I was already connected with Bryce Cruiz through social media, and he was up for it straight away. The rest was a sort of natural process – somebody saying they knew Mickey Taylor, who knew Paddy O’Brian and Kayden Gray, who knew Logan Moore. Andrea Suarez and Jessy Ares were two guys I really wanted to work with, especially as I want to talk about love and porn, and he has a boyfriend in porn too, Ricky Ares. It’s nice, because even though I didn’t mean it, the cast ended up being very varied – all types are more or less represented.

Would you say that the message is pro or anti porn industry as a whole?

I’d say it’s celebratory. There are a few questions about intimacy and sexuality which are somewhat troublesome, but then again they are that for any gay man in the era of Grindr, where these concepts are being so thoroughly revisited.

Is in your plans to show explicit hardcore gay sex on the film?

I wouldn’t call it hardcore sex, no. I want there to be nudity, and sex, but at no moment will it look like porn, or will it be made for people to jerk off too – they’re welcome to if they so wish, but that’s not my main purpose. The film will be sensual rather than sexual – which, in a way, is so much sexier. You connect more to the images, because they’re humane.

“Since I have put a face and personality to these guys, they’ve become people, rather than fantasies.”

In your first approach to this side of porn, what surprised you and what disappointed you?

I was very surprised at how kind, open and helpful the guys were. I was expecting a lot more ego, a lot more attitude. I met with Kayden Gray and Bryce Cruiz for a good couple of hours in Soho and had the most thorough conversation about all sorts of things, they really opened up. I also had long Skype calls with all the other guys, and they’ve been a joy to talk to. I am yet to be disappointed (touch wood!).

Did your porn consumption habits change after getting to know porn stars in real life?

Since I have put a face and personality to these guys, I find I cannot watch any porn featuring any of them. It’s weird – they’ve become people, rather than fantasies.

How long is the docu going to be?

It’s going to be a series of short documentaries, each of about 3 minutes. They will stand both alone or as a whole – the idea is to eventually release them in weekly episodes online once it’s done the festival rounds.

“I think it’s a really unique project and really hope people will get behind us to help get it funded and out onto the world!”

Have you ever been interested in trying at least once to be in front of the camera to experiment what porn stars do regularly for a living, (to be in their shoes so to speak)?

God no! Never! I’m awful at being in front of the camera at the best of times. I guess anybody who chooses to be behind the camera has this intrinsic voyeuristic approach, which would be betrayed if one was to be thrown in front of a camera.

Do you have an date set for the premiere? Any final words that you’d like to add?

I am hoping the film will be ready by the beginning of 2016. I think it’s a really unique project, that views porn in a different angle, with a different visual approach. We’re very enthusiastic about it, and really hope people will get behind us to help get it funded and out onto the world!

Thanks for your time Maurizio and for sharing your project with our readers. From everyone at QC we wish you all the best luck and we’re anxiously waiting to see the documentary!
