While I agree that the recognition for these films is great, I do find it a bit off-putting that the Capote film personifies and reinforces a lot of negative gay stereotypes... I know... I know... it's based on a real-life figure and he really was one of the biggest screaming queens that ever lived-but the timing is weird. BB Mountain attempts to portray the "normalcy" of a gay relationship and the fact that not all gay men have lisps and are obsessed with Prada (lol). I guess that "balance" is needed in everything, but it seems just when gays are about to be perceived in the media as "regular folks," another image comes along to just reinforce the same old tired shit. I also find it very interesting that right-wing pundits like Bill O'Reilly praise Capote (again-a film that reinforces every cliche about gay men's behavior) while they SCORN Brokeback Mountain...obviously that film humanized us too much for their comfort.

I disagree. Capote only emphasizes the passion, craziness and genius of one man. Lisp and clothes aside, I would think more people take issue with the fact that he befriended two murderers, achieving their confidence and mainly to get his book published. As far a Brokeback is concerned; It is a very good movie. I've seen it a couple of times. But it is pretty vanilla by many standards. And many women who have been 'scorned' by a man (in any sense) find that movie difficult to watch. This is not a bad thing necessarily, it just means that it resonates on many levels with its audience. You wanna talk about a bolder movie? Check out Transamerica. Felicity Huffman is terrific!

Well, seeing as it's Bill O'Reilly, should we really care what the hell he thinks. Although I'm not a fan of either Capote or BB, I suppose both "deserve" the nominations they're up for. I'm sure all closet queens can appreciate how hard it is for a Breeder to get paid to act like any kind of queer.

As big an asshole as O'Reilly generally is, I seem to remember him coming out (so to speak) AGAINST the so-called marriage amendment. If I remember correctly, he has said he thinks gay people SHOULD be able to be married.

Geno-are you sure about that? I would almost stake my life that Bill O-Reilly would be one of the last people on earth to support gay marriage. He is no friend to the "community."

Richard-I agree 100% with your comments about the issues within "Capote." I guess that I am just tired (in 2006!) of still seeing "swishy" behavior as the norm portrayed in the media. I am NOT implying that the "hey dude-look how straight I can act" persona is any better. Like many issues, I think that sometimes the gay community is its own worst enemy in embracing a lot of stereotypes and NOT tolerating ones that are perceived as "false"-i.e, no gay guy could possibly act that straight-so he must be "playing straight" or be insecure with his sexuality.

We have got a long way to go-that is for sure.

For once, let just be happy and proud that a gay themed movie has been nominated rather than disect and debate the merits of it - the fact that it should now reach a broader main stream audience is worthy of mention in itself.

"Friend of the community"? Is that used in the same sense as the epithet "enemy of the community" used here several weeks back?

Is there really such solidarity outside the bedroom among so many people who apart from their sexuality have nothing in common beyond the random--how representative of the rest of humanity/citizens/Americans/"westerners" are self-appointed activists, whatever their pet cause?

How does that square with demands that each gay person be seen as one human, one individual--each one's views, personality and being respected no less than if he happened to be straight?

So howcome Sean Hayes didn't make it to QC? He won a SAG award.. lol.. he's not officially gay but the gaydar confirms him to be 100% positive.. on mine at least.. or is Will & Grace a disliked show here.. haha

I'll bet the Religious "right" is having hissy fits over this clear sign that the queers have taken over Hollywood forever.

Maybe Pat Robertson will say that the Oscar nominations are a sign that all Gay people should be put in tuxes at all times , so the fundies know who the Gays are!

anonymous-by "friend of the community", I am using that in a VERY broad sense. My definition of that is people who support equality for ALL-not just gays. And "yes"-I would certainly hope that there is a solidarity among gays and lesbians with respect to CIVIL RIGHTS-it has nothing to do with our shared sexual orientation and everything to do with the fact that when it comes to employment, housing, marriage, adoption-and ALL other RIGHTS afforded to heterosexuals-we deserve the same. In short, it's not about the straight community "liking" us or being our "friend"-it's about NOT making orientation alone a deal buster on basic civil rights.

Is that "clearer" for you???

Yet another point evidently didn't get through to you: I gladly voted Gore, and with gritted teeth voted Kerry as well. I am also for intelligent debate--not 365 days x 8 years of sour grapes tantrums and juvenile get-even pranks.

Rhetorical questions do not require answers. Again, an explanation was not sought--the stereotypical us-versus-them battle-mentality was being mocked.

Anyway-yeah-the Oscars...three gay films up for some awards...best of luck to all of them. Actually all of the movies this year were fairly good-good night, and good luck was excellent as well...but we'll stay away from "politics" right now ;-)

Dunno, guys, but scrolling up, it seems to me that it's the other one of the two who turned an exchange of opinions into a grade-school-level insult-match. Dunno about his mood, but hysteric sarcasm ruins the mood of the rest of us.
