QC Open Forum: Would You Have Sex With A Man Who Has Received A Penis Transplant?

The story seems out of the realm of science fiction but it is not. A South African surgeon claims to have performed the world’s first (successful) penis transplant. The 9 hour operation, led by Prof André van der Merwe, saw a 21-year-old man undergo the world’s first successful penis transplant after his organ was amputated due to a botched circumcision. He got a new (used?) penis from a cadaveric donor and made a ‘rapid’ recovery regaining all functions allowing him to urinate normally and become sexually active again. There is a precedent for this type of procedure, a patient in China received a transplant in 2005 but that man asked surgeons to remove the new organ two weeks later as he showed psychological rejection. We’re still years away from lab-grown penises that don’t require a pump-up to work and could minimize immunological rejection so in the meantime the transplant solution could be a viable solution for thousands of men who have lost their penises from wounds or penile cancer for example. There’s also the topic of the transgender community and sex reassignment or people who have born with ambiguous genitalia. And then, there’s of course the millions of men that want a new penis out of pure vanity because they are not happy with the equipment they got. It is not ludicrous to think that in a few years we could be talking about penis jobs like we talk about boob jobs or nose jobs so we ask you QC reader, would you have sex with a man who has received a penis transplant?
