The Civil Partnership Act, which was passed in November last year, gives gay couples the same property and inheritance rights as married heterosexual couples and entitles them to the same pension, immigration and tax benefits.
From December 5, same-sex couples were able to tell register offices of their aim to form a civil partnership but must wait 15 days to be able to do so.
However, unlike those in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Canada, Britain’s civil partnership is not a marriage. Britain’s procedure is an exclusively civil one in which the partnership becomes binding with the partners signing certain documents; whereas a marriage becomes binding when partners exchange spoken words in a civil or religious ceremony.
According to local reports, some 1,200 couples scheduled ceremonies set to take place between Dec 19 in Northern Ireland and Dec 21 in England and Wales.
Popular singer Elton John has announced plans to enter into a civil partnership Dec 21 with his longtime partner, David Furnish, a filmmaker.
“It is a major, major change,” Furnish said in a recently published interview. “It is one of the defining issues of our times. And I applaud Britain for embracing the diversity of our society.”
Ex-Wham star George Michael has meanwhile hit out at reports which claimed that he is planning to marry his partner Kenny Goss, Michael insisted the pair would only consider a same-sex union for legal purposes.

Although Hollywood bad boy Colin Farrell has been working to stop its distribution for nearly six months, a sex video featuring himself and former Playboy Playmate Nicole Narain is likely closer to distribution this week.
Farrell filed a complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court in July to restrain Narain from releasing the video, which allegedly features the well-endowed actor in a consensually produced sex film with the buxom Narain.
Since the complaint, attorneys for Narain and online porn peddler Internet Commerce Group have been seeking distribution rights for the film, looking to make the case an issue of federal copyright, not privacy.
They succeeded this week in moving the case to federal court on copyright grounds.
“We believe that Ms. Narain is entitled to exercise her copyright per federal statutes, and we hope that the court will clear the way for the tape to be released soon,” Sal Abbate, CEO of ICG, said in an official statement Monday.
ICG wants to distribute the tape through its HollywoodSexTapes.com website.
Narain is clearly hoping the video goes public, too, having recently appeared on Rita Cosby’s “Life & Direct” show on MSNBC, where she spent a good deal of her time arguing entitlement to the money-making potential of the Farrell sex tape.
“And I want Colin to get his fair share, too,” she stressed during the Nov. 22 interview.
If Narain and ICG succeed in federal court, the Farrell tape could be on shelves just in time for Christmas!

A.C. Milan striker, Andriy Shevchenko was born in Dvirkivshchyna, Kyev in the Ukraine on 29 September 1976.
In 1999, Shevchenko joined Milan from Dynamo Kiev, where he had spent 5 successful seasons. He became the first non-Italian to be top scorer in a debut season in Italy with 24 goals in 32 matches.
He has scored over 100 goals in Serie A. Last season he was Serie A’s top scorer once more with 24 goals and helped Milan win the Champions League, Italian Cup and European Super Cup in 2003 and the Italian League title in 2004.
Robbie Keane started his football with South Dublin schoolboy side, Crumlin United F.C. where his talent was recognised at an early age. As an U-10 schoolboy he was paid 50p a goal, and was soon being watched by scouts from a number of English professional clubs, including Premier League side Liverpool.
For such a young man, Robbie Keane has already achieved much in the international arena.
He had a brilliant 2002 World Cup campaign in the Far East, scoring three goals in Ireland’s four games. His most famous goal to date is arguably the injury-time equaliser against Germany in the 2002 World Cup, although his last-minute equaliser against Spain from the penalty spot was equally as dramatic.
