QC FYI: Gays More Prone To Depression

Don't be sad, you hot-assed bastard.
WARNING! The following post is kind of a bummer, which may seem out of place for a gay porn blog. But for those of you brave enough to stare truth right in the bucket, know this: according to a recent study, gay people are 50% more likely than straight people to have suffered depression or anxiety disorders.
The study, which was published by the journal BMC Psychiatry, analyzed the data of 25 past studies of sexuality and mental health. According to the research, lesbians and gays are also more prone to substance abuse and suicide attempts.
Dr Michael King, professor of primary care psychiatry at University College London, was quick to stress that homosexuality itself is not a disorder leading to poor mental health, but that the high rate of mental ill health is probably due to lifelong stress. He said that gays and lesbians face discrimination as well as social and familial exclusion, which he believes may be linked to mental disorders.
He went on to emphasise that healthcare professionals should take into account these findings, but not assume that psychological disorders in LGBT patients are necessarily linked to their sexuality. This, he claims is often a problem for LGBT people seeking help with mental health.

QC FYI: Scientists Find Possible ‘Monogamy Gene’

But will he kiss you tomorrow?
Your desire to be promiscuous or monogamous may be linked to genetics, says a new study from Sweden. In the study, researcher Hasse Walum and his colleagues at Karolinska Institute found that allele 334—a gene variant linked to Vasopressin, an important hormone that may make men prone to marital strife and less likely to wed.
The study asked 522 male twin sets (some married with kids, some not), questions about their relationships and compared their answers to their DNA. About 40 percent of the men had one or two copies of allele 334.
QUOTE: “Studies of male prairie voles (small burrowing rodents) have shown the same hormone – vasopressin – affects voles’ abilities to remain monogamous. Vasopressin is released into the brain of mammals during sexual activity. The team found that men who carry one or two copies of the gene variant often behave differently in relationships than men who lack it.
“The incidence of allele 334 was statistically linked to how strong a bond a man felt he had with his partner. Men who had two copies of allele 334 [RS3 334] were also twice as likely to have had a marital or relational crisis in the past year than those who lacked the gene variant.
“Women married to men who carry one or two copies of allele 334 [RS3 334] were, on average, less satisfied with their relationship than women married to men who didn’t carry this allele,” said Walum in a press release.
He further stressed that the effect of this genetic variation is relatively modest, and it cannot be used to predict with any real accuracy how someone will behave in a future relationship. You can read more about the study here.

The Return of Mike Jones!

Touch me, Jesus
It’s nice to see Mike Jones, the man who took down anti-gay evangelical Ted Haggard for gay sex, prostitution, and meth addiction. Luckily for Mr. Haggard, he attended three weeks of intensive couseling and is now “completely heterosexual”—sounds kinda boring.
Jones was criticized for betraying the confidentiality of an escort/client relationship. His response to the critics was, “[T]his was unique … someone who is spewing hatred; who’s spewing discrimination; who’s touching millions of people’s lives by his verbal content. And you know what? It couldn’t continue. And I’m sorry that some people feel that way, but I can’t change that. I had to do it.” He later added, “I wish [Ted Haggard] well. I wish his family well. My intent was never to destroy his family. My intent was to expose a hypocrite.”
Apparently, Mike Jones is now on Denver’s Craigslist seeking “mutual massage.” It’s good to see he’s still getting together with men, even if only on a heavy-petting basis. Maybe “massage” is just another word for “cuddling” (which is usually just another word for “blowjob” or at least “handjob”). Or maybe it’s code for “paid anal intercourse”—we dunno. Not that we’re poking fun—we’d love to get our hands on this piece (or vice-versa).

QC FYI: What Porn Stars Really Make

Bed made!
Our friends at The Gay Times have tackled the eternal question, “How much money do porn stars actually make?”
QUOTE: “In a nutshell, if you get into porn looking to get rich, you’re cruisin’ for a brusin’. Most porn actors get paid per scene, not per movie. Their scene rates typically range from $500 to $1500. Most studios do not withhold taxes… Exclusive performers can earn $2000-$3000 per scene, but then again, they may not work as often as someone who isn’t bound by contract. Popular stars with some commercial cachet ask for and receive in the range of $5000 (that’s what Kurt Lockwood was paid to go bi for ClubHancock), but again, he’s not gonna get that kind of scratch consistently.”
They go onto say that Video On Demand (VOD) and web-based porn houses might pay more than professional studios since they lack the overhead of bigger companies—the cost of office space, salaried employees with health benefits and 401ks, DVD storage space, postage and handling costs, etc.—thus, they can afford to pay a higher scene rate on a consistent basis.
Their answer provides a ballpark idea for cocktail conversation, but stops short of actual actor’s pay. We guess that even when you’re spit-polishing a raging hard-on while eating another man’s asshole, it’s still rude to discuss salaries.
