Gay Themed Movie ‘Baby Steps’ Tackles Gay Family Issues And Cross-Cultural Relationships

With Taiwanese-American actor Barney Cheng (鄭伯昱) directing and Veteran Taiwanese actress Grace Guei (歸亞蕾) playing the role of the mother to a gay couple seeking a surrogate child, Baby Steps (滿月酒) is a cross-cultural drama from “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” producer Hsu Li-kong. The film tackles gay rights and parental rights for a very conservative society and in a way it’s a successor to Ang Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet (喜宴)”. The trailer features a song from famous Taiwanese singer – A-Mei using her birth name: AMIT.

「滿月酒」有如鄭伯昱半自傳電影，片中飾演母親的歸亞蕾是鄭媽媽的「分身」，對兒子同志性向從不明白、否認到接受的轉折，為觀眾上了一課。鄭媽媽表示，以前身邊沒有同性戀者、也從未發現兒子喜歡男生，加上當時同性戀被汙名化、等同愛滋患者，因此兒子「告白」，讓她無助又恐懼。幸好兒子主動帶她參加同志社團活動、介紹同志友人，她也努力查詢相關資料，解開疑慮、開始認同。鄭伯昱笑稱，媽媽還長出「gaydar」（同志雷達）。
