Top Gay Themed Mandarin Music Videos

Music has the power to cause emotions to well up within us. These feelings are gripping – often irresistible – and seem to emerge from nowhere. The indisputable fact about music is its power to evoke emotions. When one combines powerful vocals with gripping images, one will broaden the impact of a song, and communicate an even stronger message.
What are the most representative Mandarin pop song music videos depicting the love life of gays of our time?

1. Si-Wei Fan — “Love Again in Next Life”

范思威《下辈子再爱你》MV
Known as Mainland’s first gay themed music video, Si-Wei Fan (also known as the “Perfect Tenor”) sings boldly the bitter sweet love of gay relationships. As mentioned in the MV “I’ve endured too much restrictions of this mundane world, let us meet in our next life, and love you again. In our next life, I’d love you, only.”

2. Elva Hsiao — “Something Like Love”

The MV was pushed to public much later than the song due to several reasons. Those who tuned in to this song would normally interpret it as a regular boy-girl relationship where it is in the transition state from friendship to a more intimate one — or as the song title is, “Something Like Love.” To our surprise, when the MV was finally publicized, we finally realize that the story is about a love triangle involving a Brokeback theme. This MV was well received by the gay community, but many also couldn’t help but wonder why such MV was shot for this love song…

3. Z-Chen — “Crush”

The MV wanted to stay true to the original inspiration of the song and a gay relationship became the seed of creativity for the MV. Z-Chen played the role of a guy who had a crush on his guy friend, who is performed by De-Lie Chen. “Crush” MV outlines a love triangle between three friends, with Z-Chen falling in love with De-Lie, De-Lie liking the female lead, while the female lead adores Z-Chen. Fearing that his declaration of love will destroy all the friendship they have, Z-Chen decided to bless De-Lie in tears.
While analyzing the MV, Z-Chen said, “I finally chose to have a life-long friendship and therefore I compromised. The person battered in the windstorm is my intense expression of my suppressed love for the male lead. Music video is unlike movies where one have time to explore a storyline. I’m not a hunk myself, I never planned to show my lean frame, but I wanted to express this inner struggle. It’s just like the real me — I personally don’t find myself handsome and because of that, I never had the courage to fight for the love that should have belonged to me.”
*Tear*

4. Alisa Galper — “If I Die Tonight”

高以爱《如果没有明天》MV
The director for the MV “If I Die Tonight” specially invited the heartthrob Tob to fly in to Taiwan in order for him to achieve the desired dramatic tension. Tob played the leading role in “Bangkok Love Story” and is a well-loved celebrity in the gay scene. The story of the MV revolves around how Tob had to break up and marry with a girl in order to make his hospitalized mother happier in hopes that it’d aid in her recovery.

Closing Words

It’s truly coincidental that all the MVs above painted such heartbreaking stories for all our gay characters. This is not at all surprising as QC guess this reflects the difficulty that Asians face in the current state of their society. Let us hope that one day everyone will be able to love freely and sad gay MVs will be no more.
