Joe From Southern Strokes Charged In Alabama Quadruple Murder

24-year-old Scott Lamar Abbott (aka “Joe” from Southern Strokes) has been arrested and charged with capital murder for a March 7, 2009 quadruple homicide in Hueytown, Alabama. Jealous rage seems to be the motive as the 6-foot-7-inch Abbott stabbed and slashed four individuals aged 24 to 31 while they sleeping under the same roof. His ex-girlfriend Jeri Lyn Cole, was one of the victims; Ms. Cole, a self-described mother of two, had pictures of herself with Abbott posted on her MySpace page along with mentions of her relationship with someone named Scott. Likewise, Abbott had a photo of himself with a woman who appears to be Cole on his MySpace page, describing him as being “in love with my woman and future wife.”
Abbott had been living at the house until he was asked to leave about two weeks before the murder. Hueytown Police Chief Chuck Hagler believed the killer moved from victim to victim starting about 3 a.m. Saturday, inflicting multiple stab wounds in each. At least one of the victims fought back, Hagler said as Abbott was picked up in Gadsden on Saturday where he had sought treatment for stab wounds, said Hueytown Police Chief Chuck Hagler.
“It was a large, complicated and very violent scene,” Hagler said earlier Sunday. He called it one of the most horrific he had seen in 20 years in law enforcement, “It was worse than any horror movie.” Abbott apparently slashed and stabbed them while they slept early Saturday, March 7, 2009. Around 11:52 a.m., officers were dispatched to 225 Woodland Drive on a welfare check. Mrs. Vicky Shotts, great aunt of Nika Sandlin [one of the murder victims], had gone to the residence (Nika Sandlin’s current residence) to see why Ms. Sandlin had not reported for work earlier that day. Getting no answer at the front door, Mrs. Shotts went to the rear door and found it to be unsecure. She opened the door and immediately saw large amounts of blood in the kitchen area and she called the police department. Several officers responded to the residence and in clearing the house found two white males and two white females deceased inside. All of the victims appeared to have multiple stab/slash wounds and most every room in the residence had large quantities of blood on the floors and walls. I was contacted at approximately 12:00 p.m., and responded to the scene.

Abbot currently resides in the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, Alabama. He met with District Judge Eric Fancher by videoconference so that Fancher could read and explain the charges facing him. Apparently, it wasn’t his first arrest for violence:

Abbott was arrested on a domestic violence charge in the northeast Alabama town of Fort Payne in 2004, records show.

How Abbott pleaded in that case is unclear, but Department of Corrections records show Abbott began serving time for a child abuse conviction in DeKalb County in May 2006 and was released nine months later on condition he stay out of trouble.

Parole records indicate that Abbott violated terms of his release and was sentenced to three years imprisonment for child abuse on Aug. 4, 2008. He arrived in state custody on Sept. 16, and his state booking photo showed him with two black eyes. It was unclear what caused the injury.

With more than 800 days of jail time already behind him, Abbott earned another six months of credit for good behavior and finished his sentence on Oct. 23.
