Q: Why Do Gay Men Love the Olympics? A: Isn’t It Obvious?

“Since before the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Outsports.com has been covering gay issues in sports. The site is filled largely with coming-out stories, news analysis and slide shows of good-looking athletes.

And every two years, during the Winter and Summer Olympics, its audience traffic rises to new heights, quantifiable evidence of something often generalized and stereotyped. “Gay men love the Olympics,” Cyd Zeigler, a founder of Outsports, said in an email.” NY Times

The news came out at a meeting of the Television Critics Association this week, and was breathlessly tweeted by reporters in attendance. Executive Producer Bryan Fuller, who is gay, told everyone in attendance that they’ll be revealing little bits of info as they go, with a more detailed release scheduled for October.” Queerty

If Hollywood Won’t Tell Our Stories, We Must

“For too long there’s been a content-audience disconnect and a quantity-quality divide when it comes to “gay content.” I don’t buy into the idea that there is a genre of film called “LGBT,” but for the purposes of this conversation, let’s talk “gay content” as an inclusive descriptor to qualify films and television that feature LGBTQ+ characters and creators. Let’s consider it in the historical context of Section II of the Motion Picture Production Code, which until 1968 limited “gay content” to stories in which queer characters almost always died, often through suicide, and absolutely never lived happily ever after. Most importantly, let’s think of “gay content” as a transformative, radical act that could shape the way our allies and enemies perceive LGBTQ+ people.” Advocate
