Thailand’s Beautiful Boxer

Ekachai Uekrongtham’s Beautiful Boxer is the true story of a transvestite kickboxer in Thailand and is a poignant action drama that punches straight into the heart and mind of a boy who fights like a man so he can become a woman. This first film by the Singapore-based leading stage director does not play the story for camp or sensationalism but rather is an artisitc investigation into a divided soul.
The film not only calls into question ingrained notions of what constitutes masculinity and femininity but the degree to which the distinction between athletics and show business has blurred.
Beautiful Boxer was selected for the Panorama Section of the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival.
