Victor Garber Comes Out — Sort Of

Holy Silver Foxes, Batman! Gay celebrities are coming out of the woodwork this week. Immediately following Jodie Foster’s not-coming out at the Golden Globes, the interwebz have been buzzing with more news that isn’t really news. In an interview with blogger Greg Hernandez, Argo/Titanic/Alias star Victor Garber has made the quiet admission that yup, he’s gay.

Garber made the official admission when fielding a question about his partner, Rainer Andreesen. Hernandez writes that, “He seemed surprised by the question but said: ‘I don’t really talk about it but everybody knows.’ Garber then added: ‘He’s going to be out here with me for the SAG Awards.'” And Garber’s partner is no slouch, either.
Once again, I’m a little surprised that this has become such a news item. (Though I guess I’m writing about it, so who am I to throw stones?) Haven’t we known that Victor Garber was gay since like, the mid 1980s? For crying out loud, the man has more Broadway credits than Bernadette Peters’ original face. If quiet, dignified coming out admissions were the trend in 2012, it looks like 2013’s trend is going to be confessions that are already common knowledge.
Some predictions for the upcoming year: Neil Patrick Harris will probably come out again, Michelle Obama will announce her fierceness, Honey Boo Boo’s mom will come out as a wizard and genius, and Kim Kardashian will quietly announce her total cultural irrelevance. These are all common knowledge, right?
