“Welcome to Oklahoma City and Happy Holidays.”
The steward’s voice crackled over the speaker of the plane intercom. I looked out the window and watched the tall prairie grass kneel to the gusting wind. Ah Oklahoma—the wind really does go sweeping down the Plains.
The last time I visited Oklahoma to see my family I ended up having a wonderful tryst with Tom. However, I don’t think that’s going to happen this time. Usually I visit my Mom in Oklahoma City, however this time I would be staying my whole vacation in the town I grew up in—Oak Grove. A town that housed four-thousand people. A town that had no mall, no coffee shops, and—let’s be honest—no fun. I expected to be bored the entire time.
As my Mom and I drove an hour-and-a-half to Oak Grove, we chatted and I took in the scenery of the state. I will say that Oklahoma is a beautiful state, at least the part I’m from. Locals call it “Hill Country.” As we drove down the interstate, rolling hills dotted with brown trees scrolled past my car window. A part of me did feel sad that I probably would never live in the state again. I would like to live closer to my family, but another part of me prefers not to be lynched. OK… Oklahoma isn’t that bad, but homophobia intermingles with the state culture as easily as the gusting wind gushes between buildings.
Hours later, exhausted, I crawled into the bed in my father’s spare bedroom. It was great to see my family, but the ongoing meetings wore me out. Don’t get me wrong. I loved that my family all wanted to know what I was up to; however, I felt like a broken record being played over and over. And the responses from my family members weren’t that diverse either: Are you ever going to come home?; Are you out of school yet?; Oh, Los Angeles seems so exciting, I’m so proud for you!… and so on.
I turned off the lamp on the bedside table, and the blinking light of my blackberry caught my eye.

“Am I an idiot?” Alex asked, wide-eyed and fearful.
“No, sugar,” I responded with a wave of my hand. “We’ve all been there.” I looked down at my coffee.
Out of all my friends, Alex is definitely the most optimistic. Whenever one of us has a problem, Alex always considers the alternatives and reminds us of our strengths. It’s obvious that he’s a good attorney; no matter how hard you try to throw a pity party, Alex always talks you out of it.
The funny thing is, as good as Alex can talk me out of being a Debbie Downer, he does a damn good job of talking himself into doubt. I mean, he was raised in Columbia in a fairly strict Catholic family—maybe he’s just really used to Catholic guilt. Whatever the reason, I’m always shocked by his lapses of confidence. He’s successful, very attractive, very fit, and he lives in a beautiful condo right of Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. That said, he’s also one of the most loyal, kind-hearted guys I know. So as he’s talking to me I sometimes want to say SNAP OUT OF IT, YOU’RE PERFECT. Alas, I don’t. Why? Because he’s my friend and I love him for his insecurities.

* The Florida constitution requires 60% for an amendment to pass. Though they’re all depressing, California was easily the most important of the four with over $76 million poured into it alone (with about 70% of that financial and organizational support coming from the Mormon church in Utah). We all have the Mormon church to thank in large part. However, No on 8 still has yet to concede saying that the vote only won by 400,000 votes while 3 million to 4 million ballots remain uncounted statewide. Furthermore, California legal experts say that the state constitution makes it impossible to take away fundamental human rights without an internal government vote… so maybe there’s still hope. While Dan Savage bemoans “black homophobia“ as the cause, Pam Spaulding from Pam’s House Blend explains that while 70% of blacks voted Yes on 8, they only represent 6.2% of California’s electorate, it was white voters 65 and over living in inland areas that sent Prop 8 over the top. Meanwhile, Good As You has some thoughts on why we lost in California. Considering all their arguments, what’re your thoughts? So there’s still hope and we’ll keep you updated.But before you go getting too down about the other anti-gay amendments, hey at least there’s some progress in other American social spheres! After a recent QCA Art on the Bad Behaviour 2008 calendar, a few comments mentioned the photography of Pierre Et Gilles, a gay French couple that make glittery photographs filled with myth, camp and homoeroticism.
