We Belong is entered in the Seeds of Tolerance video competition, which gives out total awards of $140,000. Prize money for We Belong will help C.J. and other young people like him to tell their stories and address discrimination in their schools and communities.
The competition is sponsored by the Third Millennium Foundation, which was founded in 2000 as an initiative for unlearning intolerance in the new millennium, and Current TV, a national cable channel that features viewer-created content. Your vote will help spread the message of We Belong to the 30 million households that watch Current TV .
We Belong is already creating a stir in C.J.’s small rural community, as shown by a recent article in the local paper. Your vote will help make this a national issue.
We Belong is a short documentary video about a rural teen who has the courage to stand up to bigotry and intolerance in his school – and the determination to tell his story to the world.
When C.J. is gay bashed in the school locker room, then arrested for disorderly conduct because he protests to an administrator about the harassment he has experienced, he decides to fight back by making a video documentary, His project leads him to other rural youth who have suffered anti-gay harassment, and shames the school district into developing an anti-bullying and diversity training program.
We Belong demonstrates that young people have the power to change their communities and the world, and that helping youth to tell their stories, in their own way and on camera, is enlightening, empowering, and effective.
