What is “Gays Over COVID” and Why is It Blowing Up?

What is

The global pandemic has forced everyone to stay at home and it has greatly affected most of our social lives. Imagine having to give up partying and meeting new people? Though many understand the risk of trying to go back to living their normal lives, some are still afraid to miss out, even at the expense of others’ health situation. That’s when “Gays Over COVID” popped up.

It has not been that long since a Puerto Vallarta cruise sank and if you were on social media, you know how quick gay Twitter and Instagram exploded. But the nightmare did not end there for the gays who were on that cruise. They were not escape from the scrutiny of Instagram account GaysOverCovid.

With the rise of secret parties amidst the pandemic, Instagram account GaysOverCovid felt the need to expose these gay guys in hopes of them to change their behaviors and for others to not imitate them. The account has been actively posting screenshots and photos of gay men and their excessive partying in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic since last year.

The account has garnered almost 120 thousand followers as of writing and they’re even labeled as one of the many “COVID Vigilantes” in a Good Morning America cover story. The page accepts submissions from eagle-eyed followers who just couldn’t handle these gay men at underground parties anymore. Below are screenshots of famous drag queens Silky Nutmeg and Miss Vanjie hiding themselves from the camera after getting caught partying without masks which made their way to the Instagram account.

However, some of the offended ones just couldn’t take it and think that the account promotes a “culture of public-shaming”.

They even tried to figure out who are the people behind the said Instagram account and offer rewards to whoever can lead them to GaysOverCovid‘s identity.
